Summer 2009

Howdy

I spent the summer at EOU doing research. It was a great time. I also worked with some great people and I wanted them how easy it was to make web pages.

One option is to have a blog it allows you to add polls, movies, and pictures.
Another option is to a google site web page such as this one.

Here is a sample poll:

Here is a quiz to test your knowledge on NO binding:

Here is a picture from the research:

Hope you had a great summer.

Career Day Structural Engineer.

Howdy

A student of mine asked me to give a speech to a careers class. Currently I am a teacher but over the past twenty years I have had various jobs. One of which was a structural engineer for a skylight manufacturing company. I would do simple engineering on a daily basis typically trying to get business for people in the construction industry. So my daily routine involved the receiving of faxes from a contractor who was putting together a bid for a construction job. The contractor typically was a person who did windows of any type. An architect would design a building and if it had a skylight someone else would need to build it. So I would look over the plans plug it into a computer and see what type of support would be required.

To understand what I am talking about take a look at the following web page:

On the web page are letters that represent the different types of beams that would be used to design a skylight. Typically the letter E determines the size of system used in the design of a skylight. Take a look at the next web page:

Then looking at the length of the rafter typically determined the size of rafter cross section (see the following web page).

So my day to day routine involved the engineering of skylights to get an idea of the cost of skylight system, I did have one project that was rather large. The Malcha Mall of Jerusalem Israel, is a shopping mall with a large free standing structural dome skylight which I designed. I didn't do the engineering but I calculated the lengths of every part of the skylight. Here is a photo of the project as it looks today.

Hang Drum

Howdy
Last night I saw an article in a physics magazine for a relatively new musical instrument. What I thought was interesting is there was a reference to YouTube so I thought I would check it out. I was amazed that a one piece of steel could make so many sounds. Here are my top three picks: Pick Number One:

Pick Number Two:

Pick Number Three:

Enjoy the sites and sounds.

Reflections on educational technology

NCCE Conference Portland Day 1_2009

Howdy

Today was a busy day and I attended several sessions and in every one of them I learned something new or saw something that I would like to try for my f2f classes or my online classes.

The first thing I saw that looked slick was a voki I think I saw them before but some of the features described sounded cool so I had to set up an account here is an example:

Get a Voki now!

I don't say a lot but I didn't know what else to say.

One of the things about voki was that a person could update the message on a daily basis using a cell phone and that seemed cool to me and cool to students.

Another web page that was described was ?light box?. I haven't had a chance to look at that but I will later. Basically it allowed you to put a slide show into a blog much like putting in a video. I liked it because you could upload any size of picture and it automatically would format them for you so you don't have to do a lot of editing with pictures to resize them into something that is web compatiable.

Another idea that was brought up was ?nanogone?. This sounded like a good idea but it is very complicated sounds like you would need to modify some code in order to get it to work with moodle. I think a later presentation had a better solution.

Voice thread was the next thing that I created an acount with: There is a free version but it was a little tricky to get it to work correctly. You need to register as an educator. One of the things was to use the presenters example and posted it into my blog as an example.

I will update more information later.

Talk to you later.
